Coliving, serviced apartments or flex living: which one is right for you?

Bright furnished studio apartment with desk and large window

If you have searched for a furnished home recently, you have probably seen three words used almost interchangeably: coliving, serviced apartments, and flex living. They are related, but they are not the same. Choosing the right one depends on how you live, how long you are staying, and how much company you want behind your front door.

Coliving: private room, shared life

Coliving gives you a private furnished bedroom in a larger shared apartment or building. Kitchens, living rooms, and sometimes bathrooms are shared with other residents. Rent includes utilities, WiFi, and usually cleaning of common areas.

Coliving is the most social and often the most affordable of the three options. It works beautifully if you are new in town and want a built-in community, if you are a student or young professional, or if you simply prefer a lively home over a quiet one. Shared dinners, spontaneous conversations, and instant connections are part of the deal.

Serviced apartments: hotel comfort, home feeling

A serviced apartment is a fully private unit with hotel style services: regular cleaning, linen changes, and reception or guest support. Stays can be as short as one night.

This option suits business travellers, relocations with a fixed end date, and anyone who wants maximum convenience with zero shared space. The trade-off is that it can feel more anonymous, and longer stays usually cost more than other formats.

The right home is not about the label. It is about how you want to live this chapter of your life.

Flex living: the best of both worlds

Flex living sits in the middle and stretches in both directions. You get a private furnished studio or apartment, flexible stay lengths from a night to a year or more, one monthly payment that covers everything, and access to shared amenities such as coworking spaces, gyms, and rooftops when you want company or a change of scenery.

It is the option that adapts as your life changes. Stay private when you need focus, join the community when you need people.

How to choose: three questions

1. How long are you staying? For a few nights or weeks, serviced apartments and flex living shine. For several months on a budget, coliving is hard to beat. For anything in between or uncertain, flex living gives you room to change your mind.

2. How social do you want your home to be? If you want roommates and shared dinners, choose coliving. If you want full privacy, choose a serviced apartment or a private flex living studio. If you want to decide day by day, flex living with shared amenities is your answer.

3. What is your total budget? Compare the full monthly cost, not just the rent. Furniture, utilities, internet, cleaning, and deposits change the equation quickly. All-inclusive pricing usually wins for stays under two years.
